Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:
WILMINGTON, MA — Sue C. Thompson, age 80, a long-time Wilmington resident, passed away after a months-long illness on May 26, 2026.
Born in Somerville, MA along with her twin brother James on March 31, 1946, Sue was the beloved daughter of the late Charles N. Thompson and Doris (Mills) Thompson. Sue attended Somerville Public Schools.
A young mother and wife, Sue and her husband Lawrence H. Grant Sr., started their family in Somerville in 1963, welcoming their daughter, Donna L. (Grant) Hackert. A short time later, Sue, Larry and Donna moved to Richardson St. in Somerville, where they met their neighbors and soon-to-be-lifelong friends, Walter and Hazel Gosselin. Sue and Larry expanded their family in 1966 with the addition of son Lawrence, Jr.
The family of four soon moved north, settling in Wilmington in 1967 and once again having incredible luck with neighbors, landing next door to the Carta family. They became a family of five with another son, Darryl, in 1974. Sue’s outgoing personality and welcoming nature made the home a popular destination for friends, extended family, and the friends of her children.
Sue always worked hard, holding several different jobs to help provide for her family, before taking on an administrative assistant role with the Internal Revenue Service in 1980. Sue was popular with her co-workers, becoming close friends with many, before eventually retiring in 2009.
An avid and accomplished bowler, Sue made yet more close friends among her teammates, bowling in several different leagues over her adult life, and traveling to national tournaments across the country.
Sue was also very involved with and was a dedicated parishioner at the Wilmington United Methodist Church, giving freely of her time in assisting with bookkeeping and various other volunteer roles in the Church, as well as lending her soft, pretty voice to the Church’s choir.
Sue will be forever remembered for her warm, gentle soul, her unwavering love for her family, her many lasting friendships, and her deep faith. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all who knew her.
Sue was the adoring mother of the late Donna L. (Grant) Hackert of Wilmington, Lawrence H. Grant Jr. and his wife Wendy of Natick, and Darryl A. Grant and his wife Katie of Waltham. She was also the cherished mother-in-law of Philip G. Hackert of Wilmington and his wife Janine. Sue was the loving and doting Nana (“Yaya”) to Jared, Ashlyn, Benjamin, Molly, Emma, Jason and Conor, as well as her step-grandson, Charlie. She is survived by her brother Charles of Salem, NH, her sister Judith Clough of Reading, her brother John and his wife Christine of Somerville, and her sister-in-law Josephine Thompson of Medford. She is further survived by her former spouse, Lawrence H. Grant, Sr., of Melrose. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Doris, as well as her treasured twin brother, James. She is also fondly survived by many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather for Visitation at Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Avenue (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Wednesday, June 3rd from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church Street (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA.
