Brett Sawin Named Wilmington’s Next Recreation Director

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Town Manager Jeff Hull recently announced that Brett Sawin will become the town’s next Recreation Director effective October 3, 2022.

Sawin has been serving as the Recreation Department’s Program Coordinator for the past three years. Hull outlined several Sawin’s current responsibilities, including supervising the summer playground program; coordinating multiple recreation leagues (Recreation Basketball, Rookies T-Ball, SNL Flag Football, and 35+ Basketball); and managing the department’s email database and Facebook page to promote programs, trips and events.

Prior to joining the town, he served as the Community Relations Coordinator with the New England Patriots from 2013 to 2019. In that role, he coordinated game day events — including Salute To Service, Play 60, and Back to Football — and planned community events with the team at schools, hospitals, and other venues.

Sawin has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management from the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst.

Current Wilmington Recreation Director Karen Campbell will be retiring on September 30, 2022 after six years at the helm of the department. Hull noted that Campbell and Sawin will work together over the next five months to ensure a smooth transition.

“Brett shares Karen’s passion for creating recreational experiences that are fun and education, and is very personable and customer-orientated,” said Hull. “I am quite confident that Wilmington’s reputation for providing engaging, fun and affordable recreation activities for residents of all ages will continue to flourish under his leadership.”

“I’m very excited to accept the position as Director,” said Sawin. “Karen has been an amazing boss over the past three years. I have big shoes to fill. I’ve fallen in love with the town. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and am looking forward to continuing it as Director in October.”

Town Public Works Director Mike Woods and Town Treasurer/Collector Pamela MacKenzie have also announced their intentions to retire before the end of the year.
