WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Board of Selectmen were introduced to the town’s eight new firefighters on Monday night.
Firefighters Alexander Danas, Joseph Russell, George Boudreau, Jason Baker, Michael Feyler, Joseph Leverone, Meredith Welch, and Michael Silva will all be sworn in this Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 9am at the Wilmington Public Safety Building.
Fire Chief Bill Cavanaugh noted that all eight hires are Wilmington residents.
“I’m happy to have a bunch of guys and girls that grew up in town and are now giving back to their community,” said Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh explained that seven of the firefighters will be primarily funded through the $1.5 million SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response) grant the town received from the federal government last year. The eighth hire fills a vacancy created when a Wilmington firefighter recently transferred to the FDNY.
“We’re really pleased to welcome this new crop of firefighters to our department. I think it’s the finest fire department in all of Massachusetts,” announced Selectmen Greg Bendel. “We want to thank them in advance for everything that they do, day in and day out, to keep our community safe.”
“You’re all in various stages of the academy,” Town Manager Jeff Hull told the firefighters. “We wish you the best of luck in completing that process… and we welcome you to the department.”
“You have an outstanding Fire Chief and Deputy Chief, but you folks are on the front line and in the trenches. Know that not a day goes by that people in this town’s don’t think of you,” added Selectman Mike McCoy. “We wish you all the best. Be safe.”
Selectman Kevin Caira, Selectman Jonathan Eaton and Selectwoman Jomarie O’Mahony shared similar sentiments.
“I hope we get you guys that substation sometime before you’re considering retirement,” joked O’Mahony. “And always let us know what else we can do to help.”
Town Manager Hull also announced that Fire Chief Bill Cavanaugh will be officially sworn in to his position at a ceremony this Friday, March 13, 2020 at 2pm at Town Hall.
