WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Fire Lieutenant Robert Varey recently participated in the Boston Bruins’ 4th Annual First Responder Challenge on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at TD Garden.
Varey joined hundreds of first responders from across New England to raise funds for the 100 Club of Massachusetts, the New England Firefighter Cancer Fund, Tunnels To Tower, and Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation (FLEOA).
Participants accepted pledges leading up to the event, where they completed a course throughout the Garden while wearing 75 pounds of gear.
While Varey already exceeded his fundraising goal for the event, donations are still being accepted online HERE.
“Not only does [the BFit Challenge] raise money for great charities that directly affect the families of those we love (first responder families), it also helps keep us in shape!,” writes Varey.
The Wilmington Fire Department has previously been recognized as the event’s highest fundraising Fire/EMS team, collecting approximately $29,000 in a two-year span. The Fire Department received the BFit Cup in a ceremony at the Public Safety Building and was able to facilitate the donation of a full set of street hockey equipment, valued at $1,000, to the Woburn Street School in 2017 and the Shawsheen Elementary School in 2018.
