WILMINGTON, MA — Richard W. Vayo, age 86, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2020.
Richard was born on August 29, 1933, in Winchester, MA; he was the dear son of the late William and Evelyn (LeSage) Vayo. Richard grew up in Stoneham, MA and was a graduate of Stoneham High School with the Class of 1950.
Following High School, Richard enlisted in the United States Army Reserves where he served for 24 months before being called to active duty on June 22, 1953, during the Korean War. Richard entered as rank of Private First Class and was part of the 1815 76th Ord. Stock Control Detail where he trained as a specialist. During his active service, Richard, earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal; he was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on June 15, 1955, from Camp Kilmer in New Jersey and returned home to his family.
When he returned home from the service, Richard, decided to continue his education and attended Malden Business School where he met the “love of his life” Patricia Gardner. The couple hit it off right away and were married on June 29, 1957.
Richard had a thirst for knowledge and was a whiz at math so he enrolled in Bentley College in Waltham where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in accounting. Richard worked for many years as a tax accountant for the J. W. Greers Company and was quite successful throughout his career.
Richard and Pat made their home in Wilmington over 50 years ago and raised four wonderful daughters. Richard was a devoted husband, wonderful father and a proud “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. In his spare time he enjoyed puttering in his yard, painting just about anything; houses, rooms, sheds etc., golfing and travelling the world with his wife, family and friends.
Richard was the beloved husband of Patricia (Gardener) Vayo, devoted father of Cheryl Johnson and her husband Michael of Tyngsboro, Brenda Nickerson and her husband Michael of Penfield, NY, Anne Gaudette and her husband Steve of Tewksbury and Kathleen Thurston and her husband Joe of Wilmington. Loving “Papa” of Leeanne, Jimmy, Diantha, Hannah, Victoria, Jorge, Amanda, Kaytlin and great-granddaughter Adaline. Dear brother of the late Paul Vayo and Robert Vayo.
Family and friends will gather for a Service at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, February 10th at 11:30 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday, February 9th from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
