Wilmington Woman – And Houston Native – Organizing Gift Card Drive For Flood Victims

WILMINGTON, MA — A Wilmington woman is organizing a gift card drive to support the flooding victims of Houston, Texas.

Stephanie Almeda, a Houston native, will be heading home next week.  She hopes to have lots of gift cards with her.

She’s asking for gift cards in any denomination to the following businesses: Home Depot, Lowes Home Improvement, Target, and Walmart.

“It is simple and sweet,” writes Alemda. “Just those 4 retailers can cover most of a family’s basic necessitites that they need but can’t get from a donation center.”

Almeda will distribute the cards directly to families in need in the Cypress and Spring areas, in coordination with a local Cub Scouts Troop.

Gift cards can be mailed to Alemda at 33 Dobson Street, Wilmington, MA 01887.

“Most of our neighbors do not have flood insurance,” explains Almeda. “Standard homeowners insurance does not cover this kind of damage. FEMA will give them a little, but most people are looking at rebuilding and replacing all of their belongings out of their own pocket. These are just regular people. Not poor, not rich, just average folks who were doing ok before the flood and now are feeling desperate and defeated.”
