OBITUARY: Christine Ellen (Lynch) O’Donnell, 84, Longtime Wilmington Teacher

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Christine Ellen (Lynch) O’Donnell, 84, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family who meant everything to her.

Christine was born on June 29, 1942, in Lynn, Massachusetts, the cherished daughter of the late William and Jennie (Bettinger) Lynch. Raised and educated in Lynn, she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Salem State College and her master’s degree in Computers in Education from Lesley University, beginning a lifelong commitment to education.

On July 17, 1965, Christine married the love of her life, Jim O’Donnell. Together, they settled in Wilmington, where they lovingly raised their three children, Bill, Dan, and Jen, and built a life filled with family, friends, and traditions that would bring them together for decades.

A dedicated educator, Christine spent more than three decades educating children in Wilmington, first as a permanent substitute for the town and later teaching second grade at the Wildwood School. Teaching was more than a job to Christine. She loved working with children, treasured the friendships she made with fellow teachers, and took great pride in helping her students learn and grow. She retired in 2005 after a career she truly loved.

Outside the classroom, Christine knew how to enjoy life. She had a lifelong love of music, dancing, and traveling. She and Jim loved to dance and could always be found on the dance floor at weddings, family celebrations, and nights out with friends. She also loved cruising the Caribbean and treasured the friendships and memories she made along the way.

Above all, family was the most important part of Christine’s life. Strong, loving, generous, and fiercely devoted to those she loved, she treasured family gatherings, the traditions she created, and simply having everyone together. She was a devoted wife and mother and a proud Nana. Her grandchildren brought her endless happiness, and being their Nana was one of the great joys of her life.

For the last decade of her life, Christine lived with Alzheimer’s disease. It was a long and difficult journey that gradually took so much from her, but it could never erase the life she had lived, the memories she had created, or the love she had given. Through it all, Jim remained by her side. With extraordinary love, patience, and devotion, he cared for her in their home until her final breath.

Christine leaves behind her beloved husband, Jim; her son Bill O’Donnell and his wife, Christina, of Mooresville, NC, and their children, Allison, Lindsay, Joseph, Dominic, and Sofia; her son Dan O’Donnell of Hyannis, MA; and her daughter Jen Huyck and her husband, Tony, of Salem, NH, and their children, Christopher, Lauren, Rebecca, and Matthew.

She is also survived by her dear sister, Charlene O’Connor, and her husband, Kevin, of The Villages, FL; her brother-in-law Brian O’Donnell and his wife, Janice, of Dunstable, MA; and her sister-in-law Mary Maio and her husband, Andrew, of Littleton, CO. She is also lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Christine was predeceased by her dear friends Katherine Barry and Janice Mederios. Her family likes to think they were waiting for her at the gates of heaven, ready to welcome her with a good drink, plenty of food, and the kind of laughter that made their friendship so special. And knowing Christine, it probably won’t be long before someone puts on some music and the dancing begins.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue (Route 62), Wilmington, on Monday, November 9, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 10, at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Christine’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011, or Aleppo Shriners Transportation Fund, 99 Fordham Road, Wilmington, MA 33607-1435.
