ANDOVER, MA — Lloyd W. Belbin, age 93, of Andover, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026.

Lloyd was born on August 18, 1933, in Everett, MA, and was the son of the late Wilson J. and Gladys M. (Whitten) Belbin. He was raised in Everett before moving to Wilmington, where he graduated from Wilmington High School with the Class of 1951.

On March 31, 1953, Lloyd enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country aboard the USS Wisconsin during the Korean War. Following two years of dedicated service, he was honorably discharged on March 18, 1955, and returned home to begin the next chapter of his life.

On July 2, 1955, Lloyd married the love of his life, Shirley M. (Willwerth) Belbin. Together, they recently celebrated an incredible 71 years of marriage. After their wedding, Lloyd built a home in Wilmington for his new family. A few years later, they had the opportunity to build another home in Andover, where they settled in 1962 and raised their three children, Carole, Bruce, and Scott.

Lloyd began his professional career with the telephone company before joining the Andover Police Department in 1965. He was a dedicated and respected police officer who served his community with pride and commitment. Through his hard work and dedication, he earned several promotions throughout his career, ultimately retiring with the rank of police captain in 1988.

Following his retirement, Lloyd fulfilled a longtime dream by building a home in Solon, Maine. Surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors, he enjoyed spending his time hunting through the woods and fishing in the lakes. These activities brought him great happiness and reflected his love of nature and the outdoors.

An exceptionally athletic man, Lloyd enjoyed playing sports throughout his life. He participated on numerous school teams during his youth and continued playing in men’s leagues as an adult. He also had a remarkable talent for designing and building homes and could fix just about anything. Whether the job involved electrical work, plumbing, or automotive repairs, Lloyd had the ability and determination to figure it out. His practical knowledge, resourcefulness, and willingness to lend a helping hand made him someone others could always count on. He generously shared his time and talents with family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who needed assistance.

Lloyd will be remembered for his generous heart, independent spirit, and hands-on intelligence. Above all else, his greatest joy was his family. He treasured the time he spent with Shirley, his children, and his grandchildren, and the love he shared with them was at the center of his life. His legacy of hard work, service, generosity, and devotion to family will live on in all those who knew and loved him.

Lloyd was the beloved husband of Shirley M. Belbin; devoted father of the late Carole B. Wright, Bruce L. Belbin and his wife, Maureen, of Methuen, and Scott W. Belbin of Plaistow, NH; and loving “Umpa” to Joshua Wright, Robert Wright, Wilson Belbin, Elizabeth Belbin, and Tia Gagnon. Lloyd was the cherished great-grandfather of Jack, Allyah, and Theodore. He was the dear brother of the late Robert Belbin and his wife Barbara Belbin-Myers of Wilmington, and Irving Belbin and his wife, Muriel, of New Port Richey, Florida. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, October 29, at 12:00 noon. Interment with military honors will follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington.

The Belbin family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Baker Katz Nursing Center for the love, kindness, and compassionate support they showed Lloyd and his family throughout his stay.
