WILMINGTON, MA — Dorothy H. Barrett (Fennessey), fondly known as “Dot” or “Dottie” to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026, surrounded by the loving family she cherished so deeply. She was 86 years old.
Dottie was born on July 11, 1940, in Somerville, Massachusetts, the beloved daughter of the late John and Mary (Holland) Fennessey. She was raised and educated in Somerville and was a proud graduate of Somerville High School, where she formed many friendships that lasted throughout her lifetime.
On May 25, 1963, Dottie married “her sweetheart,” William “Bill” Barrett. Together, they made their home in Wilmington, where they raised their beautiful family. Dottie and Bill shared more than 45 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and countless wonderful memories before his untimely passing in 2009.
Family was the heart of Dottie’s life. She loved her whole family unconditionally, especially her grandchildren. She created a home that was always warm, welcoming, and filled with love. Her door was always open to family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers. She especially looked forward to Fridays, which were “Pizza & Beer Night at Gramma’s.” She had a remarkable kindness and generosity that made everyone feel welcome and cared for.
Dottie was the ultimate “hockey mom.” When her boys played Wilmington Youth Hockey and Bill was their coach, she never missed a game — she could always be found in the stands, cheering them on and serving as their biggest fan. She was just as devoted to all her children’s other sports and events, from youth leagues through high school, celebrating every milestone along the way. That same devotion carried through to her grandchildren, whose games she followed from youth sports all the way to college.
She gave her children her undivided attention, guidance, encouragement, and love, rarely missing a sporting event or special occasion. And when it came to her grandchildren, she was the ultimate “Gramma” — always present, always supportive, and always ready with her love.
For many years, Dottie worked as a Lunch Lady for the Wilmington School Department. She was known for her kindness and generosity toward students, staff, and her many coworkers, several of whom became lifelong friends. She had a particularly tender heart for the children and, without hesitation, would make sure that students had something to eat, regardless of whether they could afford it.
Dottie was blessed with a large and wonderful circle of friends from every chapter of her life. She loved going out to lunch and shopping with her friends, volunteering with the Women’s Club at church, joining adventures through the Wilmington Recreation Department, and participating in activities, trips, and chair yoga at the Wilmington Senior Center. She also enjoyed dinners at Rocco’s Restaurant with family and friends. Dottie was an active senior who loved staying busy, trying new things, and, most of all, spending time with the people she loved.
Dottie will be remembered for her beautiful smile, warm heart, generous spirit, and genuine kindness toward everyone she met. She was immensely proud of her Irish heritage and, above all, proud of her family and the wonderful legacy she leaves behind. She treasured time spent with family and friends, embraced life with enthusiasm, and, on a special occasion, never turned down a good glass of wine.
Dottie’s greatest gift was the love she gave so freely. She made people feel seen, cared for, and at home. Her kindness touched countless lives, and the memories she created will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Though she will be deeply missed, Dottie will live on forever in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
Dottie was the beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Barrett, devoted mother of Barbara Patch and her husband Tom of North Reading, William F. Barrett, Jr. and his wife Mary of Methuen, Jay Barrett and his wife JoAnne of Wilmington, and Kevin Barrett of Wakefield. She was the loving “Gramma” of Kasey and her long-time boyfriend Michael, Tommy, Ryan, Liam, Shannon, Jonathan, and Samantha, dear sister of Gerry Fennessey and his wife Anne of Andover and the late Larry Fennessey. Dottie is further survived by her daughter-in-law Missy Barrett and her children Grace and Matthew, as well as her extended family of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends, who were very special to her.
Family and friends are welcome to gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Monday, September 14th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. All are invited to gather at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 15th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA. Dottie’s interment will take place in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.
Donations in Dottie’s memory may be made to the Crest School Visions Program, which provides employment opportunities for adults with special needs and was very dear to her heart.
