WILMINGTON, MA — A group of approximately 60 Scouts from northeastern Massachusetts left Woburn on July 19th to attend the National Scout Jamboree. Among them were two Scouts from Wilmington’s Troop 56, Henry Borgen and Johnny Borgen.
National Jamboree is Scouting America’s premiere event, a gathering of scouts from across the country held every three to four years. 12,000 Scouts converged for ten days of camping and high adventure at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, a 14,000-acre high adventure base in the mountains of West Virginia. Scouts enjoyed all manner of outdoor activities, including climbing, mountain and BMX biking, skateboarding, kayaking, range sports, SCUBA diving, and zip lining on one of the longest courses in North America. Additionally, days at Jamboree are punctuated by arena shows, guest speakers, and leadership training.
Scouts from the Spirit of Adventure council, the scouting unit serving the Boston metropolitan area, were formed into two provisional troops for the Jamboree trip, which was bookended by sightseeing stops in Gettysburg, Hershey Park, and Washington DC. Wilmington’s Henry Borgen led one of these contingents as Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Scouting America’s highest youth leadership role. The SPL oversees troop activities and coordinates campsite duties to make sure all Scouts are fed, equipped, and organized so they can enjoy all Jamboree has to offer.
National Jamboree is a touchstone event, and participating in an adventure of this magnitude is something Scouts never forget.
