WILMINGTON, MA — Lyle M. Stockbridge, age 83, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026.
Born on October 2, 1942, in Winchester, Lyle was the beloved son of the late Howard W. and Sarah M. “Sadie” (Hall) Stockbridge. He was raised in Reading and graduated from Reading High School.
Following his graduation, Lyle enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 6, 1961. He proudly served his country for four years before receiving an honorable discharge on November 5, 1965. His military service remained a source of great pride throughout his life.
Lyle married Lorna (Union) Stockbridge, and together they made their home in Wilmington, where they raised their three children. A devoted father, Lyle was dedicated to his family and valued the time they spent together. In later years, he especially cherished his role as “Grampa” and “Great-Grampa.”
Professionally, Lyle enjoyed a distinguished career as an electrical engineer with Raytheon, where he worked for more than thirty-five years. His loyalty, dedication, and exceptional work ethic were evident throughout his entire career, having remained with the company until his retirement.
Service to others was a defining characteristic of Lyle’s life. He generously volunteered with the Masons, the Shriner’s, and Mission of Deeds, organizations that reflected his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. Whether assisting with the planning of Masonic services, volunteering at Shriner’s events, or delivering medical equipment and household necessities through Mission of Deeds, Lyle gave freely of his time and talents. His quiet generosity, integrity, and willingness to serve earned him the admiration and respect of all who knew him.
Lyle enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, playing cribbage, building model trains, fishing, and traveling. One of his favorite adventures was a trip to Alaska, whose beauty and memories stayed with him for years. Whether he was tending his garden, casting a line, or exploring somewhere new, these simple pleasures brought him great joy.
Above all else, Lyle will be remembered as a kind and humble gentleman whose compassion and selflessness touched countless lives. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer thoughtful advice, or simply be there for family and friends. His legacy of service, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those he loved will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Lyle was the devoted father of Lori Blaisdell and her husband, Philip, of Pelham, NH; Robert L. Stockbridge and his wife, Elizabeth, of Woburn; and James D. Stockbridge and his wife, Sarah, of Hampstead, NH. He was the loving grandfather of Kaylin and Donny, Krista, Corey and Julie, Alexa, Sophia, Peyton, and Addison, and the cherished great-grandfather of Makenzie, Chase, and Senna. He was the dear brother of the late Ruth Baker. Lyle is also survived by his former spouse and friend, Lorna Stockbridge, as well as many extended family members and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Route 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Everett.
