LETTER: It Shouldn’t Take A Federal Task Force To Protest Massachusetts Taxpayers

To the Editor:

The recent federal indictment of 15 individuals in Massachusetts for pulling off a massive $1.4 million public benefits fraud scheme should be a massive wake-up call for every taxpayer. The defendants systematically defrauded MassHealth, SNAP food assistance, and housing programs—critical safety nets designed for vulnerable, rule-abiding residents. Shockingly, federal prosecutors revealed that 11 of those arrested are illegal aliens, several of whom were flying completely under the radar by using stolen identities.

While our federal law enforcement partners deserve praise for stepping up to root out this corruption, the real question we should be asking is: Where is our state leadership?

For years, the Governor, the Attorney General, and the Mayor of Boston have championed sanctuary-style policies, practically rolling out a welcome mat and telling the world that eligibility rules and citizenship status don’t matter. When top state officials signal that the rules are optional, they create a climate entirely devoid of accountability.

It shouldn’t take a federal task force coming in from Washington to protect Massachusetts tax dollars. The state agencies overseeing MassHealth and SNAP should have had the safeguards in place to catch this identity theft and fraud years ago. Instead, our local safety nets are being drained while state leaders look the other way to protect their political narratives. It is time for the administration to stop treating our state budget like an open checkbook, enforce strict verification standards, and put the actual taxpayers of Massachusetts first.

Sincerely,

George Ferdinand
