WILMINGTON, MA — David Francis O’Rourke, “Dave,” age 71, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family following a brief and unexpected illness on June 4, 2026.
Born on November 18, 1954, in Winchester, MA, Dave was the beloved son of the late Francis T. “Bud” O’Rourke and Mary A. (Mathews) O’Rourke. He was raised and educated in Wilmington.
Dave graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and later earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
A lifelong resident of Wilmington, he dedicated much of his life to serving others through his work as a home health care provider, caring for many local residents with kindness, patience, and compassion. Even after entering semi-retirement, Dave continued helping those in need whenever he could.
In his spare time, Dave loved skiing and hiking, enjoyed thought provoking discussions with his son, reading everything and took pride in cooking for his family. He also appreciated the occasional round of golf and cherished the time spent with those he loved most.
Dave will be remembered for his bright mind, quick wit, and abundant compassion.
He is survived by his loving wife and secret strength, Barbara MacDonald; his cherished daughter, Meg, and treasured son, Ryan; his brother, Michael O’Rourke; his sister, Kerry Stern; his brother, Peter O’Rourke; and his sister, Ellen Cook. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends.
Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue (Route 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, June 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
Memorial donations in Dave’s name may be made to the American Red Cross.
