Wilmington’s Head School Nurse Issues Warning About Prime Energy Drink

Below is an announcement from Wilmington Public Schools Coordinator for Health Services,  published in the latest North Intermediate School’s Weekly Update:

Recently, we are seeing an increase during school hours of students consuming energy and/or hydration drinks, especially a product called Energy Prime.

Energy Prime is not suitable for children under the age of 18. The phrasing of “energy drink” makes it sound like a healthy option, especially for active kids. But the truth is the caffeine level is extremely high (200 mg). That caffeine level is not even safe for teenagers. Caffeine can lead to harmful side effects including dehydration, heart complications, feelings of anxiety and insomnia.

With the arrival of Spring, we encourage you to send a water bottle to school each day with your child and avoid all energy type drinks, but especially Energy Prime.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your school nurse.
