Wilmington Elderly Services Director Terri Marciello Provides Update On New Senior Center Project (November 2022)

Below is an update from Wilmington Elderly Services Director Terri Marciello, published in the Senior Center’s latest Buzzell Buzz newsletter:

WILMINGTON, MA — Here’s what has been happening since our last Update in the October Newsletter:

  • On October 11, the project OPM and the architects for the Senior Center and the Town Hall/School Administration Project made a final presentation to the Board of Selectmen.
  • On October 18, the Finance Committee held a Public Hearing on the articles for the Special Town Meeting to be held on Saturday, November 19. The Finance Committee unanimously voted in favor of the article for the new Senior Center. The total project cost is $17,264,561. It will be paid for with $6 million from the town’s cash reserves and $11,264,561 from a bond issue. The annual debt on the bond issue will be in the town’s annual operating budget. It will not require an override of Proposition 2-1/2.
  • There will be a Public Information Forum on the Senior Center project as well as the Town Hall/School Administration Building project on Wednesday, November 2 at 2 PM at the Senior Center. The same presentation will be given at a Public Information Forum at 6 PM on the same date at the Town Hall. It will be an opportunity to ask questions on the project.

WE HAVE NOW REACHED THE POINT THAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR SO MANY YEARS: THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE TO APPROVE FUNDING TO CONSTRUCT YOUR NEW SENIOR CENTER.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2022 AT 9 AM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM. WE SUGGEST THAT YOU ARRIVE EARLY. DOORS OPEN AT 7:30 AM. THERE ARE ONLY 3 ARTICLES TO BE VOTED ON. THE SENIOR CENTER ARTICLE IS ARTICLE 2. SINCE IT INCLUDES BORROWING FOR A PORTION OF THE PROJECT COST, A 2/3 VOTE IS NEEDED FOR THE ARTICLE TO PASS. WE NEED EVERYONE’S SUPPORT. DON’T TAKE FOR GRANTED THAT YOURS FRIENDS WILL BE THERE AND YOU ARE NOT NEEDED. WE NEED YOU TO BE THERE. IF THE ARTICLE DOES NOT PASS, IT WILL BE YEARS BEFORE WE GET ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY LIKE THIS TO BUILD A NEW SENIOR CENTER.

PLEASE ATTEND: SPECIAL TOWN MEETING SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19 AT 9 AM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL
