WILMINGTON, MA — Walgreens closed its doors at 277 Main Street in Wilmington back in June 2015. The building has remained vacant ever since, but that’s apparently about to change.
On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, a sign was displayed on the side of the vacant building, indicating “Dollar General” was moving in.
While requests for comments from the realty company and and business have not been returned, Dollar General does appear to already be hiring for this new location.
The news came as a surprise to many in town.
Aubuchon Realty Company, the parent of company of Aubuchon Hardware, purchased the 15,466-squre foot building for $5.17 million back in 2018. Despite no longer occupying the building, Walgreens continued to pay the lease, dis-incentivizing Aubuchon from finding a tenant. Walgreen’s lease was believed to run for “more than a decade” after its closure more than seven years ago.
Then, this past May, Chase Bank was in front of the town’s Planning Board for site plan approval for some proposed minor changes at the former Walgreens site. Chase indicated their desire to build a bank with a drive-thru ATM on a portion of the property. Plans apparently changed over the past six months, however. Town officials now believe Chase is considering other locations in town, including coupling a bank with the new Chipotle to be built on the former Rite Aid location.
According to its website, Dollar General features “everyday low prices on items including food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, housewares, seasonal items, paper products and much more from America’s most-trusted brands and products, along with high-quality private brands.”
Dollar General, founded in 1939, has more than 18,000 stores in 47 states. Massachusetts locations include Cambridge, Chelsea, Revere, Lowell, and Dracut.
Dollar Tree (231 Main Street), a different discount chain, has a location three-tenths of a mile away from this new Dollar General (277 Main Street).
