Vacant Rite Aid Location To Be Redeveloped: Chipotle Looking To Open In Wilmington

WILMINGTON, MA — Chipotle Mexican Grill is looking to open in Wilmington.

A developer is currently seeking permission from the Wilmington Planning Board to demolish the former Rite Aid building, located at 208 Main Street, and build an approximately 6,900 square foot commercial building with two retail spaces and a limited service restaurant.

Valerie Gingrich, Wilmington’s Director of Planning & Conservation, has confirmed that the proposed limited service restaurant is Chipotle, the popular fast casual restaurant specializing in burritos, burrito bowls, and tacos that are made in front of the customer.

The tenants for the two retail spaces are not yet known to Gingrich or the Planning Board.

The former Rite Aid building has been vacant since June 2018.

The developer’s engineering and design team will be in front of the Planning Board for a public hearing on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:35pm in the Town Hall Auditorium (121 Glen Road). The team is seeking the necessary permits — Groundwater Protection District Special Permit, Strongwater Management Permit, and Site Plan Review — to proceed with the project.

Interested residents can look at a copy of the team’s plans by visiting the Planning & Conservation Department at Town Hall between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

According to its media relations department, Chipotle serves “responsibly sourced, classically-cooked, real food with wholesome ingredients without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.” The chain has more than 3,000 restaurants and 100,000 employees worldwide — the only restaurant company of its size that owns and operates all its restaurants. Chipotle was recently recognized as one of the world’s Most Admired Companies by The Fortune 500.

Chipotle has nearby locations in Bedford, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, North Andover, Reading, and Woburn.
