OBITUARY: Esther Blufer Land, 96

Below is an obituary from Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home:

TEWKSBURY, MA — Esther Blufer Land, age 96, a resident of Tewksbury, MA, formerly of Delray Beach, FL and Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on August 1, 2022.

Since moving back to Massachusetts from Delray Beach 7 years ago, Esther has resided at Heatherwood Gracious Retirement Living. Esther appreciated all of the wonderful caregivers who have attended to her for the past couple of years. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Esther, a Holocaust survivor, was born in a small village near Vilna, Poland. She recalled having had a happy childhood until 1939 when the German invasion began in Europe. Although she was displaced from her family at a young age, Esther’s strength of mind and courage helped her to survive the war, and in particular, her traumatic years imprisoned in the concentration camps of Kaiserwald, Strassenhoff and Stutthof. She met and married her husband Ancel shortly after her liberation in 1945. And in 1949 they emigrated to America.

Both Esther and Ancel worked hard, became proud Americans and appreciated their new life in America, a place they called “the land of milk and honey.” She never complained or took anything for granted. She truly was an amazing woman of courage, strength and love.

Esther was happily employed by Western Electric in North Andover for many years, and at the time of her retirement she was a Production Supervisor in the Manufacturing Division of the plant.

In addition to work, Esther enjoyed playing cards, particularly Bridge and Canasta, and was an avid walker who for many years walked 5 miles a day. However, Esther’s family was always the most important element of her life. Although she worked fulltime, she kept an immaculate home, was a devoted wife and mother, and in later years the best Bubbee (grandmother) a child could ask for. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She gave with her heart to family and friends, and never wanted or expected anything in return.

Esther was the beloved wife of Ancel Land for 47 years who passed away in 1992 and the devoted partner of Kalman Malc for 18 years until they were separated by illness in 2015. She was the beloved mother of Martha Boudreau and her husband James of Tewksbury, MA, Robin Kavanaugh and her husband Matthew of Calabasas, CA, and Gerald Land who passed away in 2002. Esther was also the loving “Bubbee” of Mark Boudreau, Leah (Boudreau) Vaillancourt and her husband Joel, Sarah (Boudreau) Filiberto and her husband Tom, Tim Boudreau, Rachel Kavanaugh, Aaron Kavanaugh and Anya Kavanaugh. Esther was also the very loving great grandmother, “Bubbee 2” of Maya and Luke Filiberto, Millie and Hannah Vaillancourt, and Eva Boudreau. Esther is also survived by her sister-in law Riva Blyufer, nephew Vlad Blyufer and family, Niece Bronya and husband Pavel Katsel and family, nephew Barry and wife Barbara Blufer and family, and nephew Gary and wife Karen Blufer and family.

May our mom rest in eternal peace and may her memory be a blessing to all who loved her.

To honor Esther’s memory, gifts may be made in her name to: Alzheimer’s Association ( or the charity of your choice.
