Bill was born in Boston, MA, on November 21, 1931; he was the dear son of the late Julia (Kiley) Murphy. Bill was raised and educated in Charlestown, MA and a graduate of Charlestown High School with the Class of 1948.

Bill married “his sweetheart” Mary McCabe on August 4, 1951; the couple lived in Charlestown for a few years before moving “up country” to Wilmington. Bill and Mary made a wonderful home for their children, grandchildren, family and friends. Their door was always open, and they enjoyed having a houseful at all times. Bill’s unconditional love and devotion for his family was evident in everything he did.

Bill’s work ethic and great personality made him successful at work; for more than 30 years he was the Terminal Manager for Carolina Freight Trucking Company where he made many friends. Bill was passionate about his Boston sports teams, but the Red Sox were his favorite to watch. Bill enjoyed watching the games and rooting on his New England teams with his family and friends.

Bill was active at the Knights of Columbus in Wilmington for many years; he helped with countless fund raisers throughout the years and was glad to volunteer his time. Bill was known “social butterfly” who never met a stranger; he made everyone feel welcomed and included. Bill also looked forward to his weekly trips to the 99 Restaurant in Wilmington where he was treated like family by the staff and enjoyed socializing with the other customers.

Bill will be fondly remembered for his great smile and infectious laugh; he was outgoing, friendly and kind towards everyone he met. Bill was proud of his Irish Heritage and his Charlestown roots; he will forever be a “Townie” at heart. Bill left many wonderful memories of great times shared with family, extended family and friends; he will forever be loved by all who knew him.
