OBITUARY: Laura G. Butt, 91

WILMINGTON, MA — Laura G. Butt (Russell), fondly known as “Gwen” to her family and friends, age 91, a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, formerly of Malden, MA, passed away on May 28, 2022, at the Winchester Hospital.

Gwen was born on December 12, 1930, in Chelsea, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Benjamin and Annie (Baggs) Russell. Gwen was raised and educated in Everett, MA and a graduate of Everett High School with the Class of 1948.

Gwen married and lived in Malden for many years where she raised her wonderful family. Gwen was a very devoted and loving mother and Grammy; she was very involved in all the their activities and always there to cheer them on. Gwen’s home was filled with love; she had an “open door policy” and invited family and friends with open arms. Gwen loved her family unconditionally and was so proud of each and every one of them.

Gwen was a hard worker throughout her life; for many years she drove school busses for the Mystic Valley Services in Medford; Gwen enjoyed her job, loved the students as well as her co-workers, especially Linda Cummings who became her life-long friend. Gwen went on to take a position as the Dining Room Assistant at the Davenport Retirement Home in Malden, where she met another wonderful life-long friend Mary Hightower. Gwen’s endearing personality, kindness towards others and great work ethic made her a favorite employee. Gwen enjoyed socializing with the guests; she treated them as family and made their days a little brighter.

Gwen was a woman of strong faith throughout her life; for many years she was a member of the Good Shepherd Methodist Church in Malden. When she moved to Wilmington over 25 years ago, Gwen, became an active member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church and was very involved in the Miriam Esther Circle. Gwen loved her fellow parishioners; they were like extended family and she eagerly participated with them in Church suppers, fundraisers, and weekly worships.

In her spare time, Gwen looked forward to traveling with her husband Ray; she enjoyed meeting new people and experiencing new places. Gwen and Ray also enjoyed their trips to Florida where they also had a great group of friends.

Gwen will be fondly remembered as a wonderful lady; she loved to socialize with people and was truly interested in what was going on in their lives or how she could help others. Gwen was open minded to the ever changing world and she would keep up with the times, new gadgets, and of course her texting on the cell phone. Gwen had a great laugh, a kind spirit and a beautiful soul; she will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Gwen was the beloved wife of the late Raymond Butt, devoted mother of Ruth Ann Wiitala & her husband Carl of Billerica, the late William MacGregor & his wife Janet of Parker, AZ, Mark MacGregor & his wife Diane of Palmer, Karen Jones & her late husband Walter of Wilmington, Cheryl D’Auost & her husband Mark of Exeter, NH and Charles MacGregor & his wife Diana of Wilmington. Loving “Grammy” of Eric, Kristen, Evan, Keith, Alexis, Jessica, Benjamin, Lindsey, Lauren, C.J., David, Michael and her great-grandchildren Dylan, Darel, Mackenzie, Alex, Cassidy, Gracie, Jameson and she was anxiously awaiting the birth of her new great-grandchild due this August. Gwen was the dear sister of Wallace Russell of Methuen, the late Frank Russell & his wife Ann of Derry, NH, and the late Phyllis Britt. Gwen was best of friends with Linda Cummings and the late Mary Hightower; she is further survived by many special nieces, nephews and their families.

Family and friends are welcome to gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Friday, June 3rd from 9:00-10:15 a.m. followed by a Service to celebrate Gwen’s Life at the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, MA, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gwen’s memory may be made to the Mission of Deeds, 6 Chapin Ave., Reading, MA 01867.
