OBITUARY: Shirley Bedell O’Donnell, 96

Below is an obituary from MacDonald Funeral & Cremation Care Services:

MANSFIELD, MA — Shirley Bedell O’Donnell, 96, was born August 25, 1925 in Wilmington, MA to LeRoy and Vilma Bryant Bedell. Shirley attended Wilmington schools and graduated from Framingham State Teachers College in 1947. Shirley went on to teach in Marshfield, Scituate, and Wilmington. In Marshfield she met Bertram O’Donnell, the son of another Marshfield teacher and her future husband. Bert and Shirley married in 1952 and designed and built their house together on Bert’s land. Shirley always reminded us that she drew the plans, and she clearly did a wonderful job!  Starting off living in the cellar as soon as the foundation was poured, the house gradually grew, along with their family. Shirley and Bert lived out the rest of their lives in the cozy house on the pond in Seaview.  Shirley took great pride in entertaining friends there, as well as at her summer cottage on the rocky coast of Bremen, Maine. Shirley loved Maine and summered there her entire life. She had many fond memories and countless stories of time spent there with many generations of her large and loving family.

Throughout her life, Shirley was committed to teaching and volunteering.  She taught sewing at night school in Scituate, kindergarten at the Stepping Stones School in Marshfield, and eventually retired from teaching in 1989 after teaching home economics at the Cardinal Cushing school in Hanover. She was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church (Marshfield) and served the community through her work with the Nathaniel Taylor Fund. With her keen interest in local history, she was an engaged member of the Historic Winslow House Association and the Marshfield Historical Society. She belonged to the Marshfield Yacht Club, and in recent years, she enjoyed meeting friends and participating in programs at the Marshfield Senior Center. Shirley was devoted to her family and her community. Her honesty and humor will be missed by all who loved her.

Shirley passed away peacefully on March 28, 2022.  She was the beloved wife of the late Bertram W. O’Donnell for 64 years. She was the mother of Bertram W. O’Donnell, Jr. and his wife Karen of Marshfield; Dorothy O’Donnell Verdy and her husband Michael of Medway; and the late Carolyn B. O’Donnell of West Bridgewater. Grandmother of Katharine N. O’Donnell and Bertram W. “Bud” O’Donnell III and his wife Michaun of Marshfield. Great grandmother of Bertram W. “LB” O’Donnell IV. Sister of Margery Spear of Wilmington, and Iva Riley of Chico, California as well as the late LeRoy Bedell, Jr. and the late Vilma Merrill of Wilmington, the late Bryant Bedell of Andover, and the late Richard Bedell of Bremen, Maine. Sister-in-law of Franklin L. O’Donnell of Cozumel, Mexico and the late Edward B. O’Donnell of Marshfield. Shirley is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Saturday, April 2 from 12:00pm to 1:30pm at Johnson Hall (behind Trinity Church), 229 Highland Street, Marshfield.  For those who wish to join the family, a funeral service will be held in Trinity Church at 2:00pm following the visiting hours. Burial in Little Cemetery will be private at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 388, Marshfield Hills, MA 02051 or to the Nathaniel Taylor Fund, P.O. Box 288, Marshfield, MA 02050.
