WILMINGTON, MA — Minnie Penney Kirby, age 96, of Brooksby Village in Peabody and a former long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away at her home on October 14th.
Minnie was born on August 17, 1925, in Newfoundland to the late Arthur and Elizabeth Penney. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was married for 72 years to the late Donald E. Kirby. She is survived her daughter, Donna Kirby Milley of Peabody; her son, Wayne Kirby of Texas; two granddaughters; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Minnie was a proud aunt to nieces and nephews in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel.
Minnie came to the United States in 1948 with her husband, Don. They joined family here and a large population of friends and distant relatives from Newfoundland. In 1952 they built a house in Wilmington and started attending the Wilmington United Methodist Church. Over the years, this church and the town of Wilmington became their home. Minnie was a long-time member of the United Methodist Women, a Sunday School teacher, and was always a volunteer for church fairs, suppers and nursing home visitation. She also volunteered at the polls, the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels and the Blood Mobile. For a time, she worked as a “Cafeteria Lady” at Wilmington High School.
Minnie’s family wishes to thank Care Dimensions of the North Shore for their support and kindness to Minnie; the residents and staff of Brooksby Village Senior Living for their friendship, care and support; The Wilmington United Methodist Church for decades of friendship, support and love; and the Town of Wilmington for their inclusiveness and caring for their aging population.
Family and friends gathered at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue, Wilmington, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 10th for visitation, followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m.
