WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington School Committee is holding a special meeting this Monday, August 16, 2021 at 7pm in the High School’s Large Instruction Room. The meeting, which will be televised live on WCTV and wctv.org, will focus on two related topics — schools reopening and a revised mask/face covering policy
At the meeting, School Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand is expected to recommend to the School Committee that it adopt a revised mask/face covering policy recently released by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees.
The policy would require face coverings for students and staff, regardless of vaccination status, at all times at school and on school buses, except: (1) during mask breaks; (2) while eating or drinking; (3) during physical education class; and (4) while outside and socially distancing. Students would be exempt from wearing a mask if they have a medical, behavioral or other challenge making it unsafe to wear a mask. A written note from a physician is required for a requested exemption.
“The Center for Disease Control, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health have all recommended that masks/face coverings be work in schools for certain students and staff where appropriate,” Dr. Brand writes in a memo to the Committee.
Brand noted that Wilmington School Physician Dr. Mark Curdo, Wilmington Health Director Shelly Newhouse, Wilmington Coordinator of Health Services Doreen Crowe, and the Wilmington Board of Health have universally recommended that the district require masks/face coverings for all students and staff regardless of vaccination status.

The Shawsheen Tech School Committee will discuss the matter at its next meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 5:30pm in the school’s John P. Miller Conference Room. The meeting will be broadcast live on the school’s YouTube channel.
