Below is a press release from the Wilmington Knights of Columbus:
The Wilmington Knight of Columbus Council #4982 had it’s annual awards meeting on June 3.
This year, as a result of the pandemic in 2020, the awards for Knight of the year for 2019 and 2020 were presented together.
Past Grand Knight, Bob Voner presented the 2019 Knight of the Year award to George Breslin. The 2020 Knight of the Year award was presented by current Grand Knight Paul Biase to Bob “SWAT” Woods. These two men each in their own way took on leadership roles working together with many other of their brother knights to do major remodeling and upgrading to the building’s function hall, bar area, entry lobby, kitchen and member’s quarters. The foundational ideals of the Knights of Columbus are Charity, Unity & Fraternity. Working together, these and several fellow members exemplified these principles by donating time, funds and expertise to accomplish this common goal.
With the building closed through most of the pandemic, there was the opportunity to modernize it without interrupting scheduled events. Anyone who has ever been to any of the many events held at the KofC hall over the past 30 years will be amazed to see the transformation of the function hall. Fresh paint, new lighting, a completely remodeled bar area and upgraded kitchen bring the KofC facility into the 21st century. The Council is excited to be open for business and invite community organizations and other events to schedule their gatherings at the beautiful “new” hall.
Additionally, at this award presentation, two men who have been associated with the Wilmington Council of the Knights of Columbus since it’s founding in 1960 were recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Jack Kavanaugh and Al MacMullen were presented this award for their decades of dedication and service to the Council and community.
Lastly, one of the council’s legendary members who passed away during the pandemic, had his name permanently celebrated and dedicated at the new bar area in the main function hall. Al O’Connor was a charismatic, beloved member of the Wilmington KofC Council as well as District and State KofC organizations. In this way, Al will forever be remembered for a lifetime of contributions to the KofC.
