LETTER: Former School Committee Member Steve Bjork Hopes Melissa Plowman Is Elected To The Seat He Once Occupied

Dear Editor,

I am looking forward to casting a vote for Melissa Plowman for Wilmington School Committee in this year’s town election.

I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Melissa recently and I firmly believe that she is ideal for a position on the School Committee.  Melissa, a parent of two children in the district, has already demonstrated her commitment to our school system through her participation in the Middle School Principal Search Committee and the schools’ Reopening Committee.  I first became aware of Melissa when she offered comments during one of our School Committee meetings.  She offered thoughtful, productive and goal-oriented comments and suggestions for the committee to consider.  She has also been in frequent touch with Dr. Brand and others throughout this closure period – trying to help the administration and committee think about aspects of reopening that she considers important.  Over the last several weeks, she and I have spoken a number of times and I’m continually impressed with her ideas, positions and the way in which she relates to people.

For the last several years the Wilmington Public Schools have placed a focus on our students’ social and emotional wellbeing.  This aspect of education will be increasingly important as students return to fulltime in-person learning.  Melissa’s professional background in child psychology makes her a perfect complement to the current School Committee.  For nearly 20 years, Melissa has worked in the field of child/adolescent development with her own practice and has provided mental health-related consultation services for many school systems.  The benefit of her perspective on the Wilmington School Committee cannot be overstated.

I wholeheartedly endorse Melissa Plowman for Wilmington School Committee and I hope that Wilmington residents will join me in voting for her.

Sincerely,

Stephen Bjork
