LETTER: School Committee Candidate Melissa Plowman Is “A Voice For The Mental Health & Well-Being Of Our Children”

To my fellow residents of Wilmington:

I am writing to express my endorsement and support of Melissa Plowman for the Wilmington School Committee.  As a mother of three students currently enrolled in Wilmington Public Schools, as well as a classroom teacher in a neighboring community, I am excited by this opportunity and hope that you will share my enthusiasm once you understand what Melissa brings to the table as a candidate.

I first met Melissa 4 years ago when our daughters began taking dance classes together. Over that time, I have witnessed Melissa’s dedication to the children of Wilmington by serving on hiring committees for principals, as a member of the SEL reopening committee this summer and as a public commentator at the School Committee Meeting on September 15 (Minute 9:25). Never have I been more proud to call Melissa my friend.

One thing I admire about Melissa is her ability to share her concerns  for our children’s well being, while keeping a positive and respectful line of communication with the schools.  What Melissa will bring to the Wilmington School Committee is close to 20 years of working with adolescents and neighboring school communities to address and improve the mental well being of students.  Now, more than ever, we need someone with this level of expertise and experience supporting our Wilmington students.

As a public school educator myself for 16 years, I appreciate the direct, respectful, and positive relationships she has with school administration.  Melissa has voiced concerns over several aspects of our children’s learning and always with a high level of decorum and willingness to help improve situations as much as possible.  She understands the demands educators are under, but is not afraid to ask questions about improving the learning environments of our children.

Melissa has been working as a voice for the mental health and well being of the children of Wilmington for several years now.  The time has come to give her a larger platform.  Not only do our children deserve it, they need it more than ever. I ask you to join me in supporting the mental health of our entire educational system with a vote for Melissa Plowman on April 24.  To learn more please visit https://www.facebook.com/MelissaPlowmanforWilmingtonSchoolCommittee
