OBITUARY: Paul R. “Ben” Barrett, 79

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Paul R. Barrett “Ben”, age 79, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on February 15, 2021.

Paul was born in Boston, MA, on November 27, 1941; he was the dear son of the late Martin and Rita (Cronin) Barrett. Paul was “the baby” of five siblings who were raised and educated in Charlestown. Paul was quite an athlete in his younger years; his favorite sports were baseball, hockey and track. Paul was a graduate of Charlestown High School with the Class of 1959.

Paul loved growing up in Charlestown where he made many life-long friends; he was a “Townie” through and through and although he eventually moved “up country” to Wilmington, he never forgot his roots.

Paul married his “sweetheart” Arlene King on August 28, 1966; the couple built their dream home in Wilmington in 1973 where they raised three wonderful daughters. Paul fit quite well into his new neighborhood, his friendly, outgoing personality made it easy to get along with everyone; if the truth be told he was the “unofficial mayor” of Mill Road. Paul enjoyed working in his yard and was always checking up on the neighbors to see if they needed anything; he led the pack on their ride-on lawnmowers to check and see if anyone needed a hand or just to socialize.

Paul and Arlene loved to entertain, have cookouts and pool parties for his family and friends and he always made everyone feel welcomed. Paul enjoyed a crowd; “the more, the merrier”. Paul went out of his way to make sure everyone had a great time and lots of fun; his sing-a-longs were always a hit as he played the piano beautifully and by ear, he knew every tune. Paul and Arlene, along with their family, looked forward to getting together with their many life-long friends including their Malden Friends and Wilmington Family friends to celebrate special occasions; they enjoyed countless parties and many vacations together.

Paul worked hard throughout his life; he got his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute while working at the Boston Navy Yard. He then worked at Ingersoll Rand prior to starting his own business, Barrett Engineering, Inc. Paul’s work ethic and endearing personality along with his great customer service made him and his business quite a success over the years. He stayed in contact with friends he made from the industry over the years and up until this past summer would visit almost every Friday for coffee and donuts to discuss politics, religion and any other taboo subject that was considered “un-politically correct”.

Paul always made his family his number one priority, he treasured all the time and memories they shared together, he looked forward to family vacations and beamed with pride as he spoke of them. Paul was most proud to be “Papa” to his five grandchildren and had a special relationship with each of them. Paul will be remembered for his charm, personality, quick wit and ability to talk to anyone; if you met Paul once you were a friend forever. Paul was truly “one of a kind”, he will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him.

Paul was the beloved husband of the late Arlene L. (King) Barrett, devoted father of Jean Barrett & Eric Baldi of Wilmington, Kellie McHugh & Jerry Capaldi of Tewksbury and Paula Barrett of Melrose. Loving “Papa” of Danielle, Thomas and Colleen Baldi and Kyle and Brady McHugh. Brother of Patrick Barrett and Sister-in-law Kathleen of Revere, John Barrett and late sister-in-law Mary Barrett of Florida, Brother-in-Law James and late sister Kathleen Eason; the late Mary and Martin Barrett, brother-in-law of Ronald and Janine King of Wilmington and the late Shirley and Phil Sullivan. Paul is further survived by many nieces, nephews and their families as well as countless friends.

Family and friends gathered for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Sunday, February 21st from 3:00-7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, February 22nd at 10:00 a.m. in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA. Masks are required to be worn while in the Funeral Home and in Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army, Attn: Development Office, 25 Shawmut Road, Canton, MA 02021.
