Wilmington Man Lucky To Be Alive After Freak Accident; GoFundMe Page Created To Help His Recovery

BOSTON, MA — A 29-year-old Wilmington man is lucky to be alive after suffering a freak accident at his workplace.

Steve Silva, a lifelong Wilmington resident, works as a barber at Boston Barber Co. in Boston. On Friday, February 12, 2021, Silva was in the middle of cutting a customer’s hair when he slipped and landed on his barber shears, severing a major artery near his heart.

Silva’s colleagues and his customer assisted him until first responders arrived and rushed him to Mass General Hospital.

“The ICU surgeons had to crack open his chest plate for emergency open heart surgery,” said Silva’s sister Jessica. “He has a long recovery ahead of him. He loves being barber and we hope that he can make a full recovery as quickly as humanly possible.”

“From what I understand, if had been an inch to the left of the right, he would have been gone,” barber shop owner Robert Dello Russo told WHDH.

“[Steve] is not out of the woods just yet. He is still in the ICU but thankfully finally off the ventilator,” according to Silva’s co-worker Michelle Mastropietro. “We are hoping he gets shifted to a recovery by Wednesday but his heart took a significant hit and they are struggling to keep him stable.”

Mastropietro and other employees at Boston Barber Co. set up a GoFundMe page for Silva.

“Steve has a very long, excruciating road to recovery. He is our brother, our friend, favorite barber and loyal employee,” said Mastropietro. “He works hard and he is always there for those he loves. We are asking for some help for not only the medical bills, but the potential months he will be out of work. From the bottom of our heart, we appreciate anything you can do.”

The customer Silva was with during the accident — Max Cohen — told WHDH that Silva actually took the time to text him from the hospital to check to see if he was able to get his haircut finished by another barber.
