6 PRINCIPALS IN 7 YEARS: Wilmington School Committee To Meet To Discuss Middle School Principal Position

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington School Committee will meet in Executive Session on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at 6pm via Zoom to discuss contract negotiations related to the Wilmington Middle School Principal position.

On Monday, March 6, 2020, Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand announced that Wilmington Middle School Principal Alexander Phillips had taken a leave of absence. Brand did not disclose any details surrounding the leave of absence.

Middle School Assistant Principal Dr. Jeanette Quirk was then appointed as the school’s Interim Principal during Phillips’s absence. Phillips has not returned to the position as Quirk continues to serve as Interim Principal.

A resident, during the Public Comments portion of the School Committee Meeting on June 10, 2020, asked for a status update on the Middle School principal position, but the Committee members and Superintendent chose not to respond as the item wasn’t on their meeting agenda.

It is unclear if the School Committee will be engaging in contract negotiations with Jeanette Quirk to continue as the Middle School Principal for the upcoming school year. The School Committee was unable to comment on the matter prior to their Executive Session.

The Middle School principal position has been unstable over the past seven school years:

  • Christine McMenimen left the Middle School to become Principal at the North Intermediate School after the 2013-2014 school year.
  • Ralph Olsen served as Interim Principal for the 2014-2015 school year.
  • Amy Gerarde served as Principal for the 2015-2016 school year. She would resign from the position in November 2016.
  • Kevin Welch served as Interim Principal for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year (appointed by Joanne Benton), the 2017-2018 school year (appointed by Paul Ruggiero), and 2018-2019 school year (appointed by Glenn Brand).
  • Alexander Phillips served as Principal for a portion of the 2019-2020 school year. He went on leave in March 2020. Phillips beat out Welch for the position, who was a finalist. Welch would go on to become Assistant Principal at the Shawsheeen Elementary School.
  • Jeanette Quirk served as Interim Principal for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
