**THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK**
Below is a press release from the Wilmington Rotary Club:
WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Rotary Club and Rotary District 7930 are continuing our efforts to raise funds to eradicate the polio disease from the world. Despite the efforts of Rotary, The Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization and others, polio still remains a concern in a few countries overseas including Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was declared eradicated in the Unites States in 1979.
Polio is a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. It can be highly contagious and can infect a person’s spinal cord, causing severe paralysis.
Although our Rotary District’s primary fundraiser, the “Polar Plunge” at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester took place last Saturday and raised over $92,000 toward the fight against polio, twelve (12) members of the Wilmington High School Rotary Interact Club will be doing their own Polar Plunge at Silver Lake on Saturday March 14, 2020 at 1:30pm.
You know these kids. They are the ones who volunteer at the annual half-marathon, rake leaves for senior citizens, serve Breakfast with Santa and the Easter Bunny, serve the annual Valentine’s Day Luncheon at the Senior Center and a host of other activities. Together they have already raised almost $1,500 toward this cause.
If you are around town on March 14th, come on down to the Town Beach and show your support just before 1:30pm! If you are inclined to make a donation, you may do so at https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/endpolio and click on “TEAMS” (Wilmington is on page 2), and then “Fundraisers”. Then pick someone that you choose to sponsor.
