READING, MA — On January 24, 2020, Austin Prep welcomed the return of Career Day to campus. Forty-three alumni shared their professional experiences with students through panel discussions organized by profession, and a career fair including a resume-building help station.
Wilmington alumni who participated included newscaster John Cuoco (Class of 2004), attorney Robert Peterson, Jr. (Class of 2004) and attorney Jim Peterson (Class of 1976).
Headmaster James Hickey, Ph.D. addressed students before they broke-off into panel discussion groups. “Take advantage of this opportunity to interact and ask questions of our alumni. Have conversations not only with our alumni, but with each other,” Hickey said. “Some things can’t be learned from books alone.”
Jennifer Hodgdon, Director of Alumni Relations and Giving, shared a quote from St. Augustine with the students: “In your ‘today’ you will make all that is to exist tomorrow and thereafter, and in your ‘today’ you have made all that existed yesterday and for ever before.” Hodgdon stated that each of the journeys our alumni have taken beyond Austin Prep has been unique. She encouraged the students to be “present by listening to our speakers with open minds; and to ask meaningful, engaging questions. Career Day is your ‘today.’ It is your time to begin building on your future and preparing for your own journey as alumni.”
Students had the opportunity to attend two panel discussion sessions, broadly covering the following professions: Athletics, Broadcasting, Business Management/Finance, Career Services, Education, Engineering, Government, Health & Wellness/Science, Journalism/Writing/Communications, Law & Order, Performing Arts/Entertainment. Austin Prep Faculty served as moderator for these discussions.
“It was great to be back on campus and interact with students. I was very impressed with how engaged they were and how they came prepared with great questions,” alum Stephen Boghos said. “(I am) very happy I was able to participate.”
Following Career Day, students have engaged with alumni to further their discussions, including one alum who has hired a current student to work in her business. Another student will be interning with an alum this summer at a Boston news station, and a third student is exploring opportunities in journalism with the help of an alum.
