WILMINGTON, MA — Grace Palmer, who lived in Reading, Mass, most of her life, passed away January 5th, in Wilmington, Mass, at the age of 98.
She was born July 11, 1921, to John and Edna Storti, and grew up with her sister Ednamae and brother John “Bunny” Storti, both of whom have passed away.
She graduated from Reading High School in 1937.
In 1944, she married Edward Wallace Palmer of Stoneham, Mass. her husband of 59 years, who passed away in 2003. Most of their lives were spent in Reading, where they raised five children.
She was a member of Reading’s Old South United Methodist Church since 1934, and volunteered for many church projects and activities throughout her life.
Grace also worked for Reading schools and businesses, and was the first secretary for the Pearl Street School after receiving an Associate’s Degree from Burdett Secretarial School. She began working as a secretary at the Reading Memorial High School in 1968, and from 1971 to 1987 was in charge of all clerical work in the school’s Media Center. She also served on the Board for the Reading Symphony Orchestra, and as its president.
She traveled extensively with her husband and with church groups throughout the United States, Canada, Iceland, Bermuda, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
She enjoyed reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, playing piano, bridge tournaments, classical music, and was devoted to her family.
She is survived by four of her five children, Joanne Palmer having passed away in 2007. They are Rosemary Palmer and her partner Lou Doto, Jeffrey Brooks Palmer, and Betsy Ellen Palmer Coldewey and her husband Bill Coldewey, all of Reading, and John Howard Palmer and his girlfriend Dale Samson of Epping, NH, along with grandchildren John Palmer, Jr., Jeffrey N. Palmer, Dan Coldewey, Andrea Coldewey Barone, and five great grandchildren.
Visiting hours were scheduled for Friday, January 10, from 4 to 7PM, at Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn Street, (corner of Woburn St.), in Reading, MA, and a Memorial Service was scheduled for Saturday, January 11, at 11AM at Old South United Methodist Church, 6 Salem Street, Reading, MA 01867. The burial is private.
