WILMINGTON, MA — Below are a couple of recent Wilmington Little League game summaries:
Single A: Giants vs. Cardinals on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Boutwell Field
The Giants began their Single-A season with a victory over a tough Cardinals team. For the Giants, Matt Roque collected 3 hits and did a great job behind the plate. Jack Salvador collected 4 hits and 2 RBIs along with 2 strikeouts in one shutout inning of work on the mound. Dominic St. Onge and Kayan Fernandes Amancio each collected a hit in their first game ever! For the Cardinals, Ryan MacPherson led the way at the plate going 2 for 2 with a single and double. Mike Belanger, Brady Beldekas, and Max Champness each chipped in with key hits. Jake Beldekas and Vinny Demirev made some big defensive plays in the field as Liam Zolner, Drew Drozdowski, and Liam Callahan each were solid for the Cardinals behind the dish. The Giants will next take on the Pirates while the Cardinals will take on the Astros.
AAA: Astros vs. Giants on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Boutwell Field
The Giants were ready to go on (a rare sunny) Saturday morning. Brendan Cohen made his pitching debut and recorded a couple of strikeouts to start off and Ethan Lydon helped him out with a great defensive play at third. Colin Dwyer got the Giants on the board with a single to plate Gabe Lydon. Aidan Largenton was next to pitch and he brought his A game throwing an efficient couple of innings holding the opposing bats quiet, aided by a great play in the outfield by Caden Merritt who also brought home two with a timely hit late in the game. Gavin Burke and Joey Cavanaugh each picked up an RBI with some good work at the plate. Dominic DiCenso came in to close and brought some heat to pick up a couple of K’s. Overall it was a good all around game for the Giants who battled a tough Astros team. And about that Astros team, Jake Gryglik started on the mound and kept the Giants’ hitters off balance doing a great job changing speeds, striking out five in two innings. Owen Wills had one of the most spectacular pitching debuts possible with a ten-pitch shut-down inning, including a strikeout! It was the quickest inning anyone has worked so far this year. Patrick Moriarty closed the game while fielding two sharp grounders on the mound and firing to Andrew Santo at first for the putouts. Moriarty and Joey Fennelly were reliable behind the plate as always. Kevin Pruslin was one of many flashing great gloves with an outstanding catch at third base. Fennelly made a terrific play at second fielding a deflected grounder and firing it to Cael Considine at first just nabbing the runner. John Roofe and Gryglik also made nice plays in the field. Fennelly headlined the offense with two shots to the outfield including a triple clearing the loaded bases. Moriarty was a perfect three-for-three, scoring each time. Aidan Raposa continued his hot hitting with another sharp single and Santo added a double. Wills, Pruslin, Roofe, and Connor Jamieson added hits and Considine and Gryglik got on base as well. Wills flashed his speed with another stolen base. The team’s consistent energy and support of teammates were as good they’ve been all year and remain important factors in the team’s success.
