TEWKSBURY, MA — Below is a press release from the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee, followed by a response from the Wilmington Democratic Town Committee Chair Erika Johnson.
Tewksbury Republican Town Committee Press Release (“Does Dave Robertson support small business or hateful politics?)
[On Sunday], the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee called upon Democratic State Rep candidate Dave Robertson to denounce the boycott being driven by district Democrats of Dandi-Lyons, a Tewksbury business owned and operated by State Representative Jim Lyons.
“Does Dave Robertson support small business or does he support bringing politics of hate to the 19th Middlesex District because he and his party differ with Rep Lyons on the issues?” said Joe Dunn, secretary of the Tewksbury RTC. “This is just another in a long list of things that shows how far left Mr. Robertson and the Democratic party have gone in the 19th Middlesex District. We’re at the point that if anyone disagrees with the Democrats, they’ll shut you down.”
The boycott was started Friday morning by Erika Johnson, the Chair of the Wilmington Democratic Town Committee, a committee that has unanimously endorsed Robertson’s campaign. Johnson was a recent State Rep candidate in the primary that Robertson won in September. On Friday morning, Johnson posted on Facebook:
‘Dear Ice Cream Loving Friends,
Unless you like your soft serve ice cream served up with a big scoop of hate and intolerance, don’t patronize Dandi-Lyons Ice Cream in Tewksbury…There are plenty of other ice cream shops around without a hateful agenda.’
The Wilmington Democratic Town Committee Facebook page states that its mission is ‘to represent, communicate, and promote Democratic values.’
“This is Dave Robertson’s party and values,” said Dunn. “A party that values higher taxes, protecting dangerous criminals who are here illegally and now damaging the livelihood of a Tewksbury business owner and its employees all because they have different beliefs. The 19th Middlesex can’t afford to send another Democrat to Beacon Hill.”
The RTC has also been critical of Robertson’s “ICE is disgraceful” comment which came weeks after ICE detained an illegal immigrant who was arrested in Tewksbury for trafficking heroin.
Response From Erika Johnson, the Chair of the Wilmington Democratic Town Committee
I posted this message on my personal Facebook, not the Wilmington Democratic Town Committee page. My views do not reflect the views of the Committee.
Mr. Lyons brought politics into his business the moment he decided to put political lawn signs outside of his business. People deserve to know the extreme things he stands for as an elected official. All of his stances and voting record I mentioned in my post are public information.
There is no connection to Dave Robertson whatsoever as we have never discussed Mr. Lyons, his positions or his business.
The Wilmington Democratic Town Committee unanimously endorsed the entire Democratic slate of candidates on the ballot this Midterm Election.
I am disgusted that the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee made such an egregious correlation between my statement, the committee, and Dave Robertson. The TRTC misconstrued my statement as I did not advocate for a boycott. I was simply providing information about the man behind the political signs who also owns the business. Many people commented that they appreciated the information and have not patronized other local businesses who chose to take a political stand and as consumers, that is their right. Personally, I will be buying my ice cream, flowers and Christmas tree elsewhere.
