Retired Wilmington Teacher Bequeaths $50,000+ To Town Scholarship Fund

WILMINGTON, MA — Town Manager Jeff Hull recently announced a sizable donation to the Town of Wilmington Scholarship Fund.

Irene M. Brennan, a beloved school teacher and longtime resident, passed away on January 2013. At the time of hear death, she left a portion of her estate to the Town’s Scholarship Fund. The portion amounted to $53,171.96, which was recently donated by the Irene M. Brennan Family Trust.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to Wilmington residents attending Salem State University, where Brennan graduated from. Preference will be given to any student pursuing a degree in the field of education.

“It would give Irene Brennan great pleasure to know that a portion of her estate was being used for such a worthy purpose,” wrote Margaret McKenna, Trustee of Brennan’s Family Trust, in a letter to Selectmen. “I am so grateful that my Auntie El has chosen to leave such a lasting legacy to the community, and to the students, that she so dearly loved.”
