TEWKSBURY, MA — Patrick Stephen Hansen, age 38, a tour veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, passed away at home on Thursday evening, June 14, 2018, and is now in the loving peaceful arms of God, our Father.
Patrick was the devoted father of his precious son, Liam Patrick Marotta-Hansen of Wilmington.
Born in Lowell on February 14, 1980, he was the dearly beloved son of Susan (Berube) Hansen and Gerald M. Hansen of Tewksbury.
Patrick went to St. Augustine School, in Andover and then attended Tewksbury schools and graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1998.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served with the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton in California. Patrick served at the Naval Submarine Base in Silverdale, WA in the Marine Corps Security Force Company for which he received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service. He was then called to serve in al Anbar Province in Ramadi, Iraq for the duration of his tour in theatre, including a deployment on the U.S.S. Cleveland, on a mission to the Middle East.
He was awarded numerous decorations for his active duty service in Iraq including, the Purple Heart, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” Device, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Service, and two Meritorious Master Rifle Expert Badges.
Patrick downplayed all of his military achievements, but we are all very proud and thankful for his service.
Following his honorable discharge, Patrick worked as a security officer for the McLean Hospital in Belmont. In 2007, Patrick moved back to California, where he attended and graduated from the Santa Anna College Fire Academy, at the top of his Class.
Patrick’s greatest joy in life, was spending time with his son, Liam. They just adored each other. Patrick was an outstanding and loving father. He was not only Liam’s “Papa” but he was his best friend, teacher, moral compass and protector. But they also knew how to have fun. Patrick made sure that Liam was exposed to many things and everything they did was an adventure. Patrick and Liam also enjoyed life’s simplest pleasures together.
In addition to his beloved son and parents, he is survived by his brother, J. Peter Hansen of Tewksbury; his son’s mother, Nicole Marotta of Wilmington; his uncle and Godfather, Stephen Berube of Tewksbury; his loving Godmother, Patricia Canavan Beam of PA; uncle, Paul Harrington of No. Reading, uncle, George Hansen and his wife Ann of Lowell; cousins, Donald Berube of FL, Kayla Berube of SC, Karen Hansen and her partner Lisa Senatore, Erik Hansen and his wife Nicole, Mark Hansen and his wife Laura. Patrick is also survived and will be deeply missed by his loving cousins, Leslie (Harrington) and her husband John (J.D.) Doherty, Jennifer (Harrington) and her husband Thomas Boyle, and John Harrington and his wife Alicia (Forester), and their children. Who were like siblings to him. He is further survived by numerous cousins, extended family members and friends, including the Berube, Katz, Canavan, DeCarolis, and Sheehan families.
Patrick was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents, Donald and Catherine (Sheehan) Berube; his paternal grandparents, George and Winnifred (Hughes) Hansen; his aunt and godmother, Mary (Berube) Harrington; family members, David Morrisson and Patrick J. Canavan, Jr.; as well as many dear aunts and uncles.

Calling hours were held on Tuesday, June 19, from 4-8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral procession began on Wednesday, June 20, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery.
