WILMINGTON, MA — Donald E. Kirby, age 95, of Peabody, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2018.
Donald was born on November 7, 1922 in Blow Me Down, Newfoundland, Canada to Jane (Eveley) and William Kirby. He was the youngest of nine children. Donald married the “love of his life” Minnie Penney on May 4, 1946 in St. John’s Newfoundland. They emigrated to the United States in 1948 sponsored by his sister, Mabel (Kirby) Butt and his uncle by marriage, Hayward Marshall. The couple settled in Wilmington, MA, where he built their family homes on Glenview Road in 1952 and in 1956 on the corner of Wildwood and Woburn Street where they lived until 2014 when they moved to Brooksby Village in Peabody.
Donald was a member of the Boston local of the N.E. Carpenters Union for over 50 years; he was a hard worker and an extremely talented carpenter throughout his life.
Don loved his wife of 72 years, Minnie; his children, grandchildren and extended family. Don was a life-long Methodist and he was active in the Wilmington United Methodist Church since 1952. He loved taking care of his home and especially his lawn. He also loved golf and shot a hole-in-one on September 5, 1996. Don was a proud and hard-working Newfoundlander, who always ready lent a helping hand. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Minnie (Penney) Kirby; his daughter, Donna Milley of Peabody; and his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Julia Kirby of Weatherford, Texas; and his beloved grandchildren: Ross, Brad and Kevin Milley; and Cassandra and Julianne Kirby. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in the US, Canada, Austria and Israel.
Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church Street, (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Thursday, May 10th from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s memory may be made to the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, MA 01887.
