HAMILTON, MA — Kelly Duffy, of Wilmington, is featured as Eliza Doolittle in the Stage 284 production of My Fair Lady, from March 17 to March 25, at The Community House (284 Bay Road) in Hamilton.
My Fair Lady is a lush musical about transformation, patronage, gender politics and class, based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion. It is features much-loved music and sophisticated choreography, but at the heart of the show is the story of an amazingly intelligent and resilient young woman who is transformed from a “gutter snipe” to a “duchess” by Henry Higgins, a professor of linguistics.
“I have an admitted theater addiction and have not been without a show for longer than 3-4 months since 2007,” admitted Duffy. “My Fair Lady was one of the first musicals I was ever introduced to and has been on my theater bucket list since I was 5.”
The role of Eliza has been everything Duffy hoped for so far.
“She is resilient and savvy. She has a fire in her that is truly admirable. She is capable of so much more than others and even herself, believe. It is truly a privilege to experience being her,” commented Duffy. “People should expect a more modern take on My Fair Lady. Eliza is not a character that things just happen to. She is someone who takes charge of her destiny.”
“This timeless tale is at once Cinderella and suffragette. A strong, beautiful young woman who seeks to make a better life for herself without ever comprising herself,” said Myriam Cyr, director. “It remains one of the great musicals. Still relevant today, My Fair Lady takes us into the enchanted world of thought, love and happy endings.”
