WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Baseball team defeated Melrose High, 5-3, in Melrose on Tuesday, May 16.
Wilmington starter Chris Stokes pitched up his second win of the season. He surrendered just 2 earned runs over 5-1/3 innings. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 2. Wilmington reliever Graham Smith got his first save of the season, pitching 1-2/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up just 1 hit and 1 walk, while picking off a runner on first base.
Matt Rideout (3-4, 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 SB) led the Wildcat offense. Dan Gracia (1-2, double, 1 RBI), Chris Grecco (1-3, 2 RBI), Rob Ducharme (1-3, 1 RBI) and Riley Zaya (1-2) each contributed as well.
Graham Smith had the play of the game in center field when he nabbed a fly ball and then threw out a Melrose runner trying to score from third. Also of note, the Wildcats turned a 6-4-3 double play in the 7th inning to stop any Melrose comeback attempt.
The following day, the WHS Varsity Baseball team defeated Stoneham High, 9-3, at Scanlon Field on Wednesday, May 17. With the victory, the team captured the Middlesex League Freedom Division Championship for the first time since 2014.
Starter Chris Grecco earned his 5th win of the season. He gave up 3 earned runs in 7 hits in the complete game effort. Grecco struck out 8 batters and walked out 3.
The Wildcats fell behind early, but took the lead for good in the 3rd inning after scoring 5 runs on 4 hits. 5 Wildcats had 2 hits each — Jared Aucoin (2 RBI), Dan Gracia (2 RBI), Graham Smith (1 RBI), Rob Ducharme (1 RBI), and Carl Beatrice. Tom Worob (1 RBI) added a hit of his own.
Centerfielder Graham Smith made the defensive play of the game, throwing out another runner at the plate in the 6th inning to squash a Stoneham rally.
Later in the week, the WHS Varsity Baseball team defeated Burlington High, 8-5, at the Shawsheen Tech on Friday, May 19. Wilmington Apple
