WILMINGTON, MA — After receiving the necessary approvals from the Wilmington Board of Appeals, Fourth of July Committee Chair Scott Garrant was in front of the Board of Selectmen on Monday night, requesting use of the Town Common and the former Swain School site for the 2017 Fun on the Fourth festivities.
Garrant announced that the celebration will run from Thursday, June 29 through Sunday, July 2. Family Day will be held on Saturday, July 1. Fireworks and a tribute to veterans and current servicemen and servicewomen will be held on the evening of Sunday, July 2, with a rain date of Monday, July 3.
The carnival will run from 5pm to 9pm on Thursday and Friday; noon to 10pm on Saturday (with a ride special from noon to 5pm); and 1pm to 10pm on Sunday.
Fiesta Shows will no longer be operating the carnival.
“We went out to bid,” explained Garrant. “We had two bidders. We selected Cushing Amusements.”
Garrant expects to have no issues with the carnival vendor, which will be using the same site layout for the carnival as last year.
The traditions that Wilmington has become accustom to — meals every night, concerts on the common every night, the road race, ladies 2-mile walk, horseshoes, hospital bed race, and so much more — will all continue, assured Garrant. Wiffle ball is even slated to return as a part of Family Day after a multi-year absence.
Selectmen unanimously approved Garrant’s request to use the land. Several Selectmen also took a moment to thank the Fourth of July Committee for their continued efforts.
Selectmen also approved a request of Garrant to restrict hawkers/peddlers and transient vendors from conducting business within one-half of the Town Common during the Fun on the Fourth celebration. The measure is taken to protect the non-profit organizations and their fundraising efforts on the Common.
