WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Volleyball team (5-8) dropped 3 straight sets on the road against the undefeated Winchester on Friday, October 7.
- Set 1: Wilmington – 20, Winchester – 25
- Set 2: Wilmington – 11, Winchester – 25
- Set 3: Wilmington – 12, Winchester – 25
“Winchester got out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set, but Wilmington was able to come back and take an 11-8 lead on strong serving by our Libero, Emily Hill,” says Coach Bruce Shainwald. “Winchester was also a strong serving team with a strong offense and was able to take the lead back and maintain it to close out the set 25-20.”
“In the second set, Winchester ran the score up to 20-1 on strong serving by their ace server, Katherine Scully,” recalls Shainwald. “At 24-4, Christina Woods stepped back to serve and was able to run off 7 unanswered points, until Winchester closed it out at 25-11.”
“In the third set, Emily was back in at Libero and Sophomore Brittany Cimaglia got her first chance to set and run the offense, and was able to put up some nice sets.” says Shainwald. “While Winchester didn’t get out to the same kind of lead, the final result were much the same, 12-25.”
“The kind of discipline and mental toughness that it takes to come back from a tough loss, like that experienced in the second set, is hard for professionals to handle. I was pleased with the effort that Wilmington put forth in the third set, but losing is difficult,” notes Shainwald.
