TOWN ELECTION NEWS: Ballot Is Set With A Couple Of Surprises

WILMINGTON, MA — After the filing deadline passed on Thursday afternoon, the ballot for Wilmington’s 2016 Annual Town Election is set.

The local campaign season is highlighted by a 4-way race for 2 seats on the Wilmington Board of Selectmen. The School Committee races — both the Wilmington School Committee and Shawsheen Tech School Committee — will be uncontested.  The Wilmington Housing Authority race will feature no official candidates, with the winner receiving the most write-in votes.

Wilmington Board of Selectmen

Four candidates — Greg Bendel, Kevin Caira, Joseph Lavino, and Thomas Miller — will be competing for two open 3-year seats on the Wilmington Board of Selectmen.

Longtime incumbents Lou Cimaglia and Mike Newhouse are NOT seeking re-election.

In a surprise, potential candidate Martin Meyer, who pulled nomination papers in February, ultimately decided not to run.

Wilmington School Committee

Three candidates — incumbent Peggy Kane, incumbent Julie Broussard, and newcomer Thomas Talbot — will run uncontested for three 3-year seats on the Wilmington School Committee.

Incumbent Kathleen Carroll will NOT be seeking re-election.

Shawsheen Tech School Committee

Longtime incumbent Robert Peterson Sr. will run uncontested for another 3-year seat on the Shawsheen Tech School Committee.

Wilmington Housing Authority

In a surprise, two residents — Michael Hudson and John Goggin — expressed interest and pulled nomination papers for the seat, but neither returned them by Thursday’s filing deadline to the Town Clerk’s Office.  As a result, the seat will be filled by a write-in votes.

Incumbent Greg Bendel is NOT seeking re-election, instead running for Selectmen.
