OBITUARY: Gregory P. Erickson, 79, Retired Longtime Wilmington Health Director

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Gregory P. Erickson, fondly known as “Greg” or “Moose” to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2026, at Melrose Wakefield Hospital, surrounded by the love and memories of those who meant so much to him.

Greg was born on September 23, 1947, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the cherished son of the late Arthur and Madeleine (Benson) Erickson. He grew up in Southampton, Massachusetts, attending the local schools before graduating from Holyoke High School, where he formed many lifelong friendships.

Following high school, Greg answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in May 1966. A proud Marine, he served overseas during the Vietnam War, earning several commendations for his service. He was honorably discharged from active duty in February 1970 and continued his commitment to the Corps through the Marine Corps Reserve until May 1972. Upon returning home, Greg continued his education and proudly earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

On April 16, 1977, Greg married the love of his life, Paulette (Drouin) Erickson. Together, they shared 49 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, adventure, and countless cherished memories. More than 40 years ago, they made their home in Wilmington, where they raised their two beloved children, Mary and Mark. Greg was a devoted and loving husband and father, and nothing brought him greater joy than his family and his treasured role as “Papa” to his grandchildren.

Greg worked hard throughout his life, dedicating over 24 years of service to the Town of Wilmington as its Director of Public Health. He also proudly served as President of the Massachusetts Health Officers Association (MHOA) from 1991 to 1992, earning recognition for his contributions to public health throughout the state. His warm personality, genuine interest in others, and easygoing nature helped him develop lasting friendships and relationships with coworkers, colleagues, and the many builders with whom he worked. He was respected not only for his knowledge and dedication but also for the kindness and good humor he brought to those around him.

A man who embraced life and enjoyed every opportunity for adventure, Greg had many interests and passions. He could often be found riding his beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle and was one of the founding members of the Boston Chapter of the “Nam Knights,” alongside several fellow veterans. His dedication to the organization was evident in his service as club president for more than ten years. The camaraderie, brotherhood, and friendships he shared with his fellow veterans remained an important part of his life.

When he wasn’t on the open road, Greg enjoyed a competitive game of Scrabble with family and friends, shooting pool, and spending time at the VFW socializing and reminiscing with fellow veterans. He also took great pride in earning his black belt in karate.

Above all, Greg will be remembered for the kind of man he was: a great guy with a big heart, a devoted family man, a proud Marine and veteran, a wonderful confidant, and a true friend to so many. He had a gift for making connections, sharing stories, and bringing people together. His adventurous spirit, generous nature, unmistakable personality, and love for those around him will be deeply missed. Though he may be gone from our sight, the memories he created and the lives he touched will ensure that he lives on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Greg was the beloved husband of 49 years of Paulette Erickson; devoted father of Mary Hobal and Mark Erickson and his wife, Brittany; and loving “Papa” to Alyssa Doherty and her husband, Benjamin, Alexa Hobal, Michael London, and Emily Erickson. He was also anxiously anticipating the arrival of his grandson, Jack, whom he was so looking forward to meeting. Greg was the dear brother of the late Roger and Richard Royer, whom he missed dearly.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visiting hours at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue (Route 62), Wilmington, on Sunday, November 8th, from 1:30–2:30 p.m. A service celebrating Greg’s life will follow at 2:30 p.m., concluding with Military Honors in recognition of his proud and honorable service to our country.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Greg’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
