WILMINGTON, MA — Walter J. Sevener, age 99, a longtime resident of Wilmington, passed away on September 1, 2026.
Walter was born on May 18, 1927, in Bay City, Michigan. He was the son of the late Austin J. and Eva E. (Renchler) Sevener. Raised and educated in Bay City, Walter grew up as part of a loving family of five siblings.
On May 6, 1946, Walter enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He served as a military policeman and was stationed in Japan, where he assisted with restructuring efforts in the aftermath of World War II. After more than a year of dedicated service, Walter received his honorable discharge on May 22, 1947. Throughout his life, he remained deeply proud of his military service.
Following his discharge, Walter returned home and married the love of his life, Eloise (Anderson) Sevener, on September 20, 1947. They lived in Michigan for several years, where they began raising their five children: Ken, Karen, Dan, Sue, and Deb. Walter and Eloise shared nearly 64 years of marriage before her passing in 2011.
Walter began his career in Michigan as an apprentice tool-and-die maker. After accepting an opportunity to work as a machinist for Raytheon in Massachusetts, he and Eloise moved their family to Wilmington in 1959. They spent many wonderful years together in their family home on Middlesex Avenue. Walter continued his career with Raytheon until his retirement.
A devoted member of his community, Walter served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, now Abundant Life Church, in Wilmington. His faith was an important part of his life, and he generously volunteered his time at church events and social gatherings.
Walter loved spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He had a deep appreciation for nature and continued helping his son Ken prepare firewood well into his 90s.
Walter will be remembered for his gentle, kind nature and his devotion to those he loved. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather whose presence will be deeply missed by his large and loving family.
Walter was the beloved husband of the late Eloise (Anderson) Sevener. He was the devoted father of Kenneth Sevener of Wilmington; Karen Byron of Hobe Sound, Florida; Dan Sevener & his wife, Christine, of Clover, SC; Sue Ann Sevener of Manchester, NH; and Debbie Mitrano & her husband, Jerry, of Billerica.
Walter was the loving “Grandpa” of Vincent & Lisa, Judith & John, Kristine & the late Lee, Kelly & Mark, Kathy & Jesse, Aaron, Brent & Erin, Camie, the late Jerry, Tammy & Darren, and Terry & Mike.
He was the cherished “Great-Grandpa” of Adeline, Mary, Jeremy, Danielle, Jessica, Holly, Steven, Natalie, Austin, Alyssa, Zachary, the late Derek, Jared, Jillian, Jordan, Braeden, Jade, Bryce, Gavin, Addie, Tanisha, Devin, Desirae, Tiffany, Dana, Ava, and Michael, and the beloved “Great-Great-Grandpa” of Nylah and Archer.
Walter was the dear brother of the late Bob Sevener, Allan Sevener, Bill Sevener, and Ruth Beadle. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather for visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue (Route 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, September 8, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment with military honors will take place at Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington.
