WILMINGTON, MA — Picture this: you’re a restless, adventurous writer and a refugee from the corporate grind. In your forties, there’s limited time available to reinvent yourself. And so, in 2010, you sign on for a job teaching English literature to teenagers. in Erbil, Kurdistan.
At that time, Kurdistan is recommended by the New York Times and by National Geographic as one of the World’s Best Places to Travel.
In the September episode, I bring you Alex Poppe, author of Breakfast Wine, a memoir describing the pleasures and dangers of her days in the geo-cultural region divided between Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and home to the Kurds, who are the largest ethnic group in the Middle East without their own homeland.
It’s an understatement to say that the author is bombarded by cultural differences, especially the lowly status of women, but she becomes an ardent admirer of her students – their eagerness to learn English, their curiosity about their teacher Alex and about her country, The Great Gatsby, and Julius Caesar.
