Born in Winchester, Massachusetts, and raised in Wilmington, Dave later graduated from Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, Florida. His strong work ethic began early, working at Captain Higgins Seafood Restaurant as a teenager. After working as a licensed plumber, he returned to the family restaurant, proudly managing Captain Higgins from 1987 to 2004 and building lifelong friendships with customers and colleagues alike.
A lifelong learner, Dave graduated as the top American History student at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1985 and earned the prestigious Crown Fellowship to continue his studies at Brandeis University. His passion for history led him to write A History of Wellfleet, 1860-1980.
Dave’s interests were many. He was an exceptional cook, an avid reader, a passionate New England Patriots fan, and a devoted wine enthusiast. He loved sharing stories, discussing history and football, and spending time with family and friends.
Of all his accomplishments, Dave was most proud of being a husband, father, and “Grampy.” He shared a special bond with his grandson, Nate, whom he loved unconditionally. Inspired by his lifelong affection for Siberian Huskies and his grandson, Dave became a published children’s author, releasing The Littlest Husky in the Land of the Ice Warriors in 2021.
Dave is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Balch; his daughter, Valerie Lazzari, and son-in-law, Tom Lazzari; his cherished grandson, Nathaniel David Lazzari; his sisters, Carol Case and Jeanne Coser; his brother, Mark Balch; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Per Dave’s request, there will be no public services. His family will hold a private celebration of his life.
