WILMINGTON, MA — In this month’s Book Stew episode, I am thrilled to welcome returning guest Shannon Sanders, who introduces The Great Wherever, her multi-generational powerhouse story of a landholding and the family, living and not, who labors to keep it.
Shannon’s debut short story collection, Company, was featured on the show in February 2024.
The Great Wherever, her first novel, has been acclaimed by Oprah Daily, NPR, the Boston Globe, the New York Times, and other national press.
Within the story are four characters who are “passengers out in the world”. They are the non-corporeal spirits of cousins, a great-great-grandmother, and a daughter, all with unbroken ties to a farm in fictional Serviceberry, TN. They try to keep their young relative Aubrey invested in the designated Century Farm (100 years of single-family ownership) as she struggles with career and romantic setbacks in Washington, DC.
The farm, which was originally purchased by the Lamb family from a former slaveholder, and the adjacent town, a land grant from the same family, are viewed through each era as new generations stay connected and fall away.
