Town Manager Slagle Provides Updates On Sciarappa Farm, Elementary School Project

Below is the “From The Manager’s Desk” column from the latest Town Topics Newsletter.

Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, and as we enjoy graduation season and the warmer weather, let’s discuss some of the important issues on tap for the Summer of 2026.

SCIARAPPA FARM

Town Meeting took an important step this year in funding the additional funds necessary for the Town to obtain the Sciarappa Farm property. In a process known as a friendly taking, the Town and the Sciarappa family reached an agreement on a price for an eminent domain taking, and the family agreed to accept the price without litigation. After the Town Meeting vote on funding, the Select Board officially voted to take the property and the taking has been finalized. The Town now owns Sciarappa Farm, which has been a long time goal of both the Select Board and many other Boards and Committees in Town.

ANNUAL TOWN MEETING

I want to thank everyone in Town who took time out of their busy schedule to come to Town Meeting on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The participation by the residents was very encouraging! We successfully passed the FY2027 Budget and funded the North Wilmington Fire Substation. Thank you all for your participation!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROJECT

We are at a very exciting stage in the Wilmington Consolidated Elementary School project that is going to be built on the North Intermediate School site. The school is currently in the permitting stage, with construction scheduled to begin this summer. Remember, the project has the school scheduled to be open for the kids at the end of the summer of 2028, so progress will be happening quickly!

OTHER REMINDERS

A reminder that Town Hall will be closed on Juneteenth (June 19th), Friday, July 3rd in celebration of Independence Day (July 4th), and Labor Day (September 7th).

Finally, I would like to thank all of the department heads and staff for their hard work through the budget process. The budget that Town Meeting voted on in May would not have been possible without all of their help. In addition, I would like to recognize the residents who give their time to be on our Finance Committee. This committee of volunteers spent several Saturdays, plus other nights this winter, meeting on our budget and capital plan to make sure it was responsible and met the needs of our town, and I would like to thank them for all of their hard work as well.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT

This month, I would like to highlight the excellent work of our Fire Department. These hard working folks work tirelessly to keep our homes and residents safe day and night! Kudos to Chief Bill Cavanaugh, Deputy Chief Brooke Green, all of the officers, firefighters and all of the clerks in the Fire Department as they work hard each day to give us a Town where we can safely live and work!
