Below is a press release from Middleborough Public Schools:

MIDDLEBOROUGH, MA — On the evening of June 3, 2026, the Middleborough School Committee conducted interviews with four highly qualified candidates for the position of Interim Superintendent of Schools.

Following the interviews and thoughtful discussion, the School Committee voted unanimously to appoint Dr. David Thomson as the Interim Superintendent of the Middleborough Public Schools, pending successful contract negotiations. If approved, Dr. Thomson is expected to begin serving in the role on July 1, 2026.

Dr. Thomson brings more than 30 years of educational experience to Middleborough, including service as Superintendent of Schools in Norwood, Interim Superintendent in Wilmington and Mashpee, Assistant Superintendent in the Blackstone-Millville Regional School District, and principal at both Raynham Middle School and Qualters Middle School in Mansfield. He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northeastern University and has dedicated his career to improving student achievement and supporting excellence in public education. Throughout his career, he has led strategic planning initiatives, managed multimillion-dollar budgets, overseen major school construction projects, strengthened curriculum and instructional programs, and fostered strong partnerships with students, staff, families, and communities.

School Committee Chair Sue Pennini expressed her strong support for the appointment:

“The School Committee was impressed by Dr. Thomson’s extensive experience, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to supporting students, staff, and families. We are confident that he is the right person to guide our district during this important time. On behalf of the School Committee, I look forward to welcoming Dr. Thomson to Middleborough and working alongside him as he leads our schools, supports our staff, and ensures continued success for our students and community.”

Dr. Thomson shared the following statement regarding his appointment:

“I am very excited to be joining the Middleborough Public Schools as your next Superintendent. With over thirty years of experience in education as both a teacher and an administrator, I have dedicated my career to supporting students and fostering inclusive school communities. I am thrilled to be joining a school district committed to educational excellence and students’ well-being, and to building an equitable and inclusive environment that empowers all learners to become the best versions of themselves so they may positively impact our community’s future.

The work in Middleborough aligns closely with my core values, ensuring that all students persevere to become critical thinkers who collaborate, achieve impactful goals, and develop the social awareness to become responsible community members. We must prepare our students for a different future, one where their ability to continuously learn and develop meets the needs of an ever-changing world. I cannot wait to meet with stakeholders and begin the work!”

The School Committee would also like to extend its sincere appreciation to Sean Costello of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) for his guidance and support throughout the search process. His expertise and assistance were instrumental in helping Middleborough identify and recruit a strong pool of highly qualified candidates for consideration.

As an interim appointment, Dr. Thomson will serve in the role for a period of one year. During that time, the School Committee will begin the search process in the 2026-2027 school year to identify a permanent superintendent who will provide long-term leadership for the Middleborough Public Schools. The Committee is committed to conducting a thorough and inclusive search process that engages stakeholders from across the school community.

The School Committee appreciates the time and dedication demonstrated by all four candidates throughout the interview process. We look forward to completing the next steps and welcoming Dr. Thomson to the Middleborough Public Schools community.
