Below is a press release from Wilmington Public Schools:
LONDON, UK – This April vacation, a group of twenty-nine performing arts students representing theater, band, and orchestra programs completed a comprehensive cultural expedition to London. The week-long itinerary provided these young artists with a deep dive into the history, architecture, and professional performance standards of the United Kingdom. From the historic stalls of Borough Market to the modern heights of the London Eye, the students spent their spring break immersed in the sights and sounds of one of the world’s most significant artistic hubs.
The journey began with a focus on London’s famous districts, including walking tours of Soho, Chinatown, and Covent Garden. The group visited iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Buckingham Palace to witness the Changing of the Guards. They got to see the city through a river cruise along the Thames and from above on the London Eye. Additionally, 15 students participated in the “Tour for Muggles,” a Harry Potter-themed walking tour that allowed them to explore the city through a different lens, connecting literary and cinematic history with real-world locations. The curriculum also extended to the sciences and history with visits to the Natural History Museum and the London Transport Museum, where students studied the evolution of urban navigation and the social history of the British Underground.
The trip had a profound impact on the personal growth of the attendees, particularly regarding their confidence in navigating a global city. Student Megan Smith noted the significance of this experience, stating, “I have been impacted by the independence I have gained through this trip. Not only did I feel supported but also free to make my own choices about what I did.” This sense of growth was bolstered by the strong community within the group itself. Another traveler reflected on the inclusive environment of the trip, noting, “Something that impacted me on this trip was everyone being so kind. I didn’t feel excluded in any of the groups I was in.”
As performing arts students, the group engaged in several high-level theatrical and musical experiences. They attended a West End production of Hadestown and a performance of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. They had the opportunity to attend a unique world premiere concert by the London Symphony Orchestra, which featured four new contemporary pieces. The students went behind the scenes at the Royal Albert Hall, where they had the opportunity to witness the technical setup and preparations for an upcoming concert. On William Shakespeare’s birthday, the students toured the Globe Theatre and participated in a professional acting workshop centered on Macbeth. The instructor was notably impressed by the students’ performances, noting their ability to step into their element and handle complex material with ease.
The students return home with a broader global perspective, having successfully navigated a major world capital and engaged deeply with its historical and creative heritage. Group leaders Taejasvi Andrade and Samantha Prindiville note that they are grateful for the support that makes these trips possible, as seeing these students prove their responsibility and return with a renewed love for exploration is exactly what inspires them as educators. For many, the trip served as a catalyst for future participation in the arts and fostered new connections within the school’s music and drama departments that will continue long after their return.
